YouTube’s pre-roll adverts will be catastrophic
Last week my colleague here at 451Press, DaveP predicted that YouTube’s decision to introduced “pre-rollâ€? adverts bound to reduce the popularity of the site if it’s mandatory. He was so true. according to a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive, a large portion of YouTube users expressed that they won’t be visiting YouTube as often if Pre-Roll adverts introduced. The Survey was conducted among 2309 individuals in the US.
42% said they had watched a video on YouTube, and 24% saying they were frequent users, but watched less than an hour a week. 75% of those frequent users said they would be less likely to visit the site if the videos contained pre-roll ads.
So far YouTube has never publicly said that they are considering including short commercials before the clips on their site. Only Last week at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley said they were considering monetizing YouTube videos in order to share revenue with the content creators. But the 30 second long advert clip before video is just a possibility, among few others. There are lots of other options open for YouTube to monetize video hosted in their site. It might be even the new form of video advert style introduced by adbrite. No one knows for sure what type of monetizing YouTube will adopt, in order to reward video creators/posters. Harris Interactive’s survey shows if in case YouTube decided to include short commercials before the clips on their site, the result will be catastrophic. So i guess YouTube will consider that before making that decision.

I think that the possibility of posters getting revenue from their posts at YouTube would be great, for the most part.
I don’t know all the details of their idea on the matter, but it wouldn’t be fair for users posting pirated video to get revenue from that type of content. For those with original content, it would be a way to at least make a few bucks doing something you enjoy and are already doing anyway.
As far as the advertisements before the videos, I agree that they would be detrimental. I know I hate them on sites such as CBS’s Innertube, but I do put up with them. Users on YouTube aren’t likely to do that though because the desire for the content isn’t comparable to content on sites like Innertube.

I really hope they don’t have pre roll advertisments. I love being able to paste videos on my blog, and having ads in front of them will be much less desirable to watch for my readers. It’s one of the reasons I hate Ifilms, I can’t stand having to wait for a stupid ad to load.

Cliff & Paul,
It is true in order to give contributors revenue, YouTube need some kind of advert system. but not pre-roll, maybe something different. Because YouTube isn’t alone out there. The love of YouTube won’t be enough to keep the users if pre-roll comes.
As for making money with pirated content, well i guess YouTube have now some kind of moderators, they have to be alert.
