YouTube got sued by UTube
Seems to be Google is going to face now the first big lawsuit after its YouTube acquiring. But surprisingly Lawsuit didn’t come from any mass Media for hosting copyright contents. The owner of UTube.com, Universal Tube is now suing the video sharing site, demanding that YouTube stop using their name. Universal Tube & Rollform Equipment Corporation of Perrysburg, Ohio, has filed a lawsuit in the US District court in Toledo.
Both YouTube and UTube are totally in different business industry. Universal Tube (UTube) is a business selling tubes, pipes, “tube mills? and other machinery. On the Other Hand YouTube is a video sharing social community site. UTube complained a few weeks back that their site (UTube.com) was being downed by heavy traffic as users looking for YouTube landed on their site instead, apparently by typing the wrong domain name. This downtime costing them a great deal of money in lost customers. According to UTube their unique visitor went up from 1,500 to 2 million per month, which raise their Bandwidth cost up to 100 times. As Universal Tube registered UTube.com since 1996, and YouTube.com is a year old name, Universal Tube has priority claim on the name.
Most of the blogger speculated YouTube will go to get sued sooner or later (Especially after Google owns it) for violating copyright laws, but honestly didn’t see this one coming. Video sharing site sued by a Tube company certainly odd. Most of the people I know would consider themselves lucky if somehow they got a hold on Domains related to popular sites, since that’s fortune. But Universal Tube certainly isn’t happy, you can say that. I am not a lawyer so I can’t tell you how much ground they have to win this, but certainly I know there are thousands of Domain out there mimicking some other site (not necessarily intentionally). Probably YouTube now owns by Google that is the bigger reason YouTube got sued, otherwise why Universal Tube wait till now, since last year YouTube is drawing heavy popularity isn’t it?
