Yahoo’s holiday mood

by

Since last week Yahoo! is taking of my RSS inbox. Apparently Yahoo! is having a great week so far. They are in the holiday mood, acquire/shipping and making deals. Today they make announcement of partnering with 176 daily newspapers in US. The partnership deal would be to share content, advertising and technology. The first part of the deal is newspapers will use Yahoo! job to post their employment classified ads than move onto using HotJobs technology in their own online employment ads.

But the long-term goal of the alliance with Yahoo, is to be able to have the content of these newspapers tagged and optimized for searching and indexing by Yahoo. The agreement could also come at an opportune time for Yahoo, which is seeking to regain the confidence of investors and the luster it has lost with some marketers. The deal could also help position the company as a willing partner for traditional media companies, an effective counterpunch to a deal its archrival, Google, signed with 50 papers a few weeks ago, and could help it capture a larger portion of the fragmented local advertising market. As everyone knows Yahoo! is struggling in stock market.

Perhaps last week online karaoke and contest site Bix acquiring, this weeks this 176 newspapers deal are just a sign that Yahoo! is gearing up to overcome its troubles in coming year.

Simple chart:

  • Google deal 50 Newspaper-Yahoo 150
  • Google buy YouTube-Yahoo Bix
  • Now Yahoo or Goggle?

So what would be the next move for its rival Google?
