Talk Back: Blogging Professionally, Full Time - Does It Appeal?

by Sheryl Sisk

Be honest now. Does blogging professionally full time appeal to you? Sitting around in your jammies all day, if that’s your couture of choice, sipping coffee and browsing the web? I have to admit - some days, when the law practice gets particularly overwhelming, the life of a pro FT blogger really has its appeal for me.

Still, others want the variety of leaving the house for work, going to an office, having their coffee breaks with real live people in 3-D.

Ever since the arrival of the Gawker blogs in my realm of awareness - first Wonkette, then Gawker and Defamer - it presented itself as a real, viable option. I’m sure others share my experience - and still others credit another blog with that catalyst of discovery.

So, what’s your pleasure? Do you secretly yearn for the life? Or is it just something other people do?

After spending 20 years taking the subway to sit in a cubicle and attend weekly meetings, I can tell you it is indeed preferable to blog full time.

I left a full time career to start my family, and freelance as a writer part time. Writing evolved into blogging and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.

I suppose it’s not for everyone, but I’ll do it for as long as people enjoy reading what I have to say.

I would LOVE to be a full time pro blogger. I’m trying my hardest to make it a reality, but getting that all important break is tough.

I also do a bit of freelance writing, but find that blogging is my medium of choice, with the speed, intensity and feedback all very appealing to me.

  3. Jummy Says:

I too would love to be at least a successful part time pro blogger. I love the idea of developing your voice and expertise, interacting with and reaching a wide range of people and the whole process of learning (about yourself, your audience and about life in general).

  4. Lynn Says:

It’d be great to make a living blogging. I love blogging because I like to write and love the blog format. It would be a real challenge to make a sole income from it.

  5. Elisa Says:

I would *adore* blogging full time. Right now I work full time, then maintain my three blogs at night. It’s exhausting, but since the blogging is the thing that I enjoy the most…well, I guess I’ll just keep doing both until I can figure out how to do it full time.

Hell yeah, i would love to be able to be a fulltime blogger. honestly, if got to have my cake and eat it too, i’d be at the beach, blogging and writing my novel on my beautiful-shiny-expensive laptop with a white mocha in front of me, a smoke in the ashtray and my 10-month old daughter learning to write french in the sand. i’m left with blogging during nap time, a white mocha and/or smoke in one hand while pushing a stroller and no french in my world at all. it’s still pretty good, though!

  7. Roberta Says:

I would also love to be a full time professional blogger. I am still learning the ways to make money online and enjoy giving my readers thoughtful posts, while encouraging comments.

I’m also here to tag you from the Cleveland site to write about five reasons you love blogging. Enjoy!
