This is great or what! Linden Lab, the maker of virtual world, “Second Life” just declare it to be open source. Over at Second Life’s official blog saying “Embracing the Inevitable”, announced the availability of Second Life client source code. This will be released under GNU GPL version 2. Linden Lab blog says–
We are not desperate, and we welcome the inevitable with open arms.
Stepping up the development of the Second Life Grid to everyone interested, I am proud to announce the availability of the Second Life client source code for you to download, inspect, compile, modify, and use within the guidelines of the GNU GPL version 2.
So what stores for “Linden Lab” in future, while they just made “Second Life” available for public dissection and experiments? Don’t worry it will be nothing less than glorious future. Open source rules now, look at Firefox, Thunderbird under mozilla flag, there are a lot of them. The perfect example you can see is WordPress, see people develop for their own needs which leads to great development.
