Things To Get Over!

by Perceval Mackendrick

Blogging can be fun at times, and worrisome at other times, but you have to keep in mind that blogging is something that you do for fun, and if it is work for you, then it should be fun work, or you should quit blogging.

Sometimes, though, as an avid blogger, you will have your downtimes. There will be periods when your blog doesn’t get as much traffic as you were hoping. Sometimes, as a blogger, you will have to get over the fact that errors will happen when you are working with a blogging company.

And if you are working with a blogging company, you have to keep in mind that not all things run smooth all the time, and not everything will work out the way you planned them.

Heck, most of the time, you end up nowhere near close on where you planned to be.

So, we need a solution for when there are downtimes, and shortages, and low traffic relating to low self-esteem issues.

One solution is taking a break. Nothing like taking a break from blogging will replenish your taste/hunger for blogging. If you are used to being on a computer all the time and typing into Wordpress Formatted blogs, then taking a break will make you want to get back to doing that.

Blogging is not a drug, but it sure can be addicting at times. When you have been gone for a week, you want to see how your blog has been doing on the web, how much traffic its been getting, and things such as this.

So, while you can’t always take a break from being on the computer, you can take a break from blogging.

There is the downtime blog post today from BlogNewsWatch. Hope you enjoyed it, and TAKE A BREAK! :D

Choosing Your Content

by Perceval Mackendrick

Choosing your content, sometimes, is the best thing you can do for your blog to intercept traffic. Besides, hot-women pictures, and unique writing styles, another way to get a internet-user to your site is doing some type of review.

For example, if you have a tech blog, then you might consider buying some of the high tech gadgets that you write about and make a youtube video, or your own video format, to tell your readers exactly how it works.

Sometimes, people want to see the gadget in use rather than the simple existence of the gadget. For example, I am much more likely to see your site if you have a post that reviews a gadget, including a video on how the gadget works, the pros and cons of the object, rather than just seeing an image of an object and a description.

Yes, sometimes, description can be good, but you have to vary your posts so that the readers aren’t bored by the constant descriptions.

It will be different for each type of blog that you are writing. For example, if you are writing in a personal blog, you don’t really have much to review other than submitting a personal video. If you have a book blog, then typing in some of the books words, can be a good way to start your review of the book (but make sure you give credit to the author)

Mind you, doing review of all things is going to be a tough ride, you don’t really want to do that. Instead, you can review something one time every 2 weeks or something like that. The key word here is moderation.

Blogging Comments

by Perceval Mackendrick

Well, I am no expert in this area, as you can see, I can never bring in any people to comment. Is it because I’m not giving them enough? or is it just because they’ve already read what I’m writing somewhere else? Or are they just very lazy?

Well, before you try to get your readers to comment on the site, you have to keep in mind this:

People are lazy.

Yes, they are, don’t you tell me I’m wrong. You see it everywhere, and you know that is enough proof. (One for example would be that people are making diet commercials [ yes you know you see them on tv too]. The fact that there are diet commercials means that there are people lazy enough to not walk a few places to get there things.)

Anyways, this means that your writing has to be unpredictably, and unfathomably, original. In addition to this, your writing for your blog must have something that will bring in your reader (and keep him guessing what the actual fact is) and leave a great conclusion that will make your reader want to come back to read more. (In other words, a substantial end-of-the-post Punchline)

Yes, sometimes pictures can help bring in your readers, but never will the pictures make your readers comment on your blog post. (Actually, I got one comment that said something along the lines that I was posting too many sexy lingere women pictures)

This was the time where I was getting to the point that attractive pictures will bring your reader in. And of course, it got readers to see the picture at first, and then read the article. BUT, you can not count on the pictures doing all the work for you, when you are writing a blog post and want a reader to comment on your blog and/or site.

And maybe, if you make the posts shorter than 500+ word count posts, it can also have a great effect. Begging for comments never helps, so leaving the begging for comments out of the posts :!:

Hope you enjoyed the article today, and have a Great Day! :D

Blogging Ethics

by Perceval Mackendrick

When you are blogging, you eventually, run out of ideas to put on your blog, and eventually you also run out of ideas for youtube videos. This is when you go searching the web for more ideas, or even blogs to see what other people are doing.

Sometimes, just out of curiosity, I’ll take a look at some random wordpress & Blogger blogs to see what in the world people are writing about. And sometimes, I come upon ideas that others have written on, and want to write on myself.

However, its unethical to post exactly what they posted on, in my blog, but you can’t really link to their blog just yet, because you don’t know the validity of it yet. You don’t know if they are just making up nonsensical things to waste their time.

So, then, I will pour out to google to find out other people who have written about almost the same thing. Fortunately, when I find some credible source, I link to that. So, what do you think? Is this an ethical issue of infringement, or is it completely legit?

I would say that it is ethical, mostly because I’m not exactly copying what the other blogger wrote about, nor I am not linking to where I found the actual source or links to my article.

I am simply finding something interesting in a minor blog, and then finding it in a major blog, and taking my opinion into the idea. The most important thing to know is that taking your own opinion of an idea that other people have already written about is what makes your blog (post) conformable.

Is Blogging worth the time?

by Perceval Mackendrick

For many of you, blogging is something that you would do for fun, or maybe its just a diary of what happens in your daily life. A blog can be anything from a techblog to something more personal such as your myspace blog.

So, before I go on, I must assume that many of you already have a myspace page, as it was and maybe still is the most popular thing to do. Now, you may not think as myspace as a type of blogging service, but really, it is. It is just more easier than actually typing out the articles on a regular blog.

Technically, its more of a social network interface, but many people have written many stories in their “Introducion” space.

Anyways, back to the point on whether or not blogging is worth your time. Some people will tell you that it is worth your time, and some people will tell you that it is not worth your time. (Usually, the people who tell you it is worth your time are making money, and the others are not correspondingly)

And here I am trying to answer the question: Blogging is not actually for everyone, some people can handle it and some people can’t. Its just hard for some people to type up an entry EVERY SINGLE DAY into a blog. Some people can’t even brush their teeth every single day.

So my advice to you is that if you are willing enough to spend a lot of time into blogging, (and assuming that you have a decent amount of time, maybe an hour a day) then you are available to the blogging world. Mind you, I did not say that you should go ahead and blog.

If you would like to make a personal blog, then it is all for you to go make it, but if you are going to make a blog that is trying to make money, well, you will be faced with obstacles of Hell, which I will discuss in the next post tomorrow:!:

A Comment Won’t Hurt.

by Perceval Mackendrick

While blogging on your past time is one of the most favorable things for you to do, you must not forget that while you are blogging, writing posts isn’t the only thing to do.

You need to visit other websites to get your blog name out there.

While some people simply create a blog and get attuned traffic to it without any help from anyone, some others of us have to work on getting our blog out there and present to blog readers.

Its almost like studying for a test; some people will do good on a test even if they don’t study, but others will have to study harder and constantly to do just as good as the other person.

If you don’t understand that analogy, think of yourself being in school. (Unless you are clearly the top in your grade at everything and the top in recreational things too) When you are in school, there are always people smarter than you, but for you to have to be as smart as them, you just need to work harder.

Its not your fault you’re not as smart as the other guy, its just natural.

Anyways, back to the point that comment on other sites could be good for your blog.

But, one thing you want to remember is not to spam their comment boxes.

You really want to read their posts and actually comment on them. I know it will take time to do all of this, but you need to spend that kind of time to promote your blog and also your name.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you make a good impression on your comment, they blogger of the site will most likely visit your site out of sheer impression.

I know this for a fact because I do it often. Once I get a comment regarding any posting or tips here, I see what site they are writing and try to comment on their posts.

Of course, it is a exchange of exchange. You make a comment on their site, and then they make a comment on your site. Both of you benefit, and also, your link to their site will also help them link back to you.

Anyways, thats the tip of the day today, and I hope you enjoyed it :D

Tech Deals of the Day: Asus PC

by Perceval Mackendrick

Asus is starting to be a big company. Along with its first set of laptops being the smallest screen laptops that I have ever heard of, it is now making some respectable laptops that will start comparing to Apple and Microsoft.

Personally, I just want them to beat the Apple products because they are way cheaper than the Apple products. Not to say that Microsoft’s products aren’t cheap, because there are not, I just know that Apple has the potential to cost more than anything that Microsoft has made thus far.

Endgadget has done a good deal with this Asus U6 not to mention the fact that they get the actual computers to play with before than can post on it.

As a professional blogging site such as that, I don’t think they are wrong in what they post or do, but depending on the type of machine that it is, it will be in my bests interests to either stay away or love to death.

As you can tell, this machine looks pretty slick. Almost as sleek as the HP Pavilion dv2700 series. It has in it a 3GB RAM, 2.6 Processor, and also 250 GB Hard drive. I am unsure as to what other features lay upon the model, but it looks like a decent model to invest upon.

I know it shouldn’t matter what it looks like, but right now it does. The type of material used to make the complete oustide of the laptop looks really shiny, but is definitely in the wrong color. Its a type of coal color that makes you think that you are living in Colorado, or some coal mining state. :P

No offense to Colorado, they probably don’t even coal mine there. :P

Time to Blog: Making Room For A New Blog In Your Busy Schedule

by Perceval Mackendrick

In my blog consulting work with Blawg In A Box and Inspired Consulting, I frequently hear three major complaints from bloggers:

  1. I don’t know what to write about!
  2. Nobody’s visiting my blog!

but far and away the most often heard complaint:

  3. I don’t have time to blog!

So, today’s post is for the #3-ers in the world - which, at one point or another means all of us bloggers, I can promise you!

Pinpointing the Problem

Before you can solve a problem, you have to first identify it. Seems simple enough in the context of this topic. After all, how many permutations can there be on the theme of “not enough time”?

Plenty, as it turns out. Consider whether you don’t have time …

  • because you’re unorganized?
  • because writing is a chore for you on par with building the Eiffel Tower out of toothpicks and Elmer’s Glue ™?
  • because you’ve got too much on your plate?
  • because you’re working against type?

That’s not an exhaustive list, of course, merely a representative one. But those four factors seem to be the ones I run into over and over again.  Take a moment to identify which one’s most likely the problem for you. To do this, simply adopt the logical “fix” in your imagination and see what the result is. Imagine you get more organized with a schedule that’s detailed and all your files and relevant information available at your fingertips. Do you “feel” better now? Can you see yourself blogging more effectively?  If so, you should definitely start by looking at organization as your main dragon to slay.  Likewise with writing - if you can see yourself hiring a ghostwriter, say, and having that immediately solve your blogging problems - well, even if hiring a ghostwriter is out of your budget (and you might be surprised), at least you now know what you need to focus your efforts on.

Give Yourself a Blogging Checkup

Once you’ve identified the problem and put a plan in motion to address it, consider taking an objective look at your blogging with an eye towards “tweaks” - small adjustments with minimal effort required that might yield larger than anticipated dividends.  Can you find a better way to collect and process “blog fodder”? (See this post for one super-easy and completely free method I designed.) Are you working against type? In other words, are you most suited for short bursts of writing, and instead you’re trying to force yourself into the mold of the dedicated all-day-long blogger? Are you writing in the PM when you’re really a morning person? Do you need a refresher course on social media?

Identify your weak spots, and then explore the web for some targeted solutions. Don’t get lost in browsing archives here - we’re aiming for greater productivity, remember?  Use Technorati tags and the search function of A-list blogs-about-blogging to get to the meet. (Another tip: use our weekly roundups for a one-stop searching shop.)

Delegate Your Life

Take a cue from 4HWW and outsource or delegate your delegable tasks. This requires a brief period of objective observation. The best method I’ve found is simply taking a blank 24-hour agenda page (print one off of iCal or Google Calendar or whatever app you prefer) and make 7 copies, one for each day of the week. Label the day (if it’s not already pre-printed) on each and then jot down your actual activities in the spaces provided. Break it down as far as you’re able, though I don’t know that it’s necessary to write down every 5 minute bathroom break. Simply add them all up and total them somewhere. You’re looking for patterns and timesucks - those tasks, whether large or small, that add up to a considerable drain on your energy and time.

Once you’ve identified a timesuck that might be subject to some sort of tweaking, ask yourself whether you can (A) kill it, (B) pare it down, (C) do it less often or more quickly, or (D) outsource it to someone else.  Don’t fall into the egotistical CEO trap of thinking you have to do everything yourself. If someone else can do it, but needs training, find time to train. Spending too much time at the grocery store but you have an able-bodied teenaged son or daughter with a driver’s license? Well, then.  I smell a tradeoff coming! Car time for grocery shopping. Seems fair to me! Wouldn’t trust your kid with the household shopping? Then take him or her on a couple of outings, run down the basics, and work out an arrangement whereby you monitor the results and the continued use of the car depends on adherence to the rules you set down.

Be Realistic

Don’t over- or under-estimate how much time blogging really takes. To do it correctly, you want to allow time for proofing, for revising, for “quality assurance” review (making sure links are correct, for instance), and for publicizing (tags, pinging - if not done automatically, social media, etc.).  But don’t fall into the trap of thinking every post must be a Hemingway-esque masterpiece of prose. Sometimes, good enough is good enough.

CYA!

Cover your absences, in this case - by making sure you have a steady backup supply of non-time-critical blog post drafts from which to select during those times when you really don’t have time to blog (and we all have them). Also consider assembling a “blog group” - a few bloggers who write about similar (if not competitive) themes who are willing to cover each other via “guest posts” from time to time.  Sometimes we all need a little help from our friends, right?

Time To Let Go …

Don’t be afraid to ask the question, “Do I really have time for this?” If you’ve tried the above tips, and you’re still wrestling with your time commitments … if you’re getting it all done but just barely and are miserable to boot … maybe - just maybe - it’s time to consider giving something up. That’s the conclusion I was forced to draw earlier this month when I realized that I was at a critical crossroads with respect to one of my practice blogs, the SC Bankruptcy & Consumer Law Blog. Not only had my time seriously decreased as a result of the launch of my BIAB service, but my interest was waning as well. I realized it was an important blog, and a very important subject - and it therefore deserved better treatment than I was able to give it. So I made the difficult decision to sell the site. (I hope to write more about how that was accomplished as a “how-to” post a bit later on, after the sale’s been wrapped up.)

This leaves me time to focus on my Employment Law blog (which is about the practice area I spend most of my law practice time in), and two new blogs I’m developing: Goddesses in Progress (currently under wraps for a formal launch later this year) and The Fibro Follies (which will launch on Friday - more on that in a later post, too). Was it a difficult decision? Absolutely. But once it was made, I felt a relief that sank down to my bones. (I even noticed a marked improvement in my writing and critical thinking skills - it’s amazing, really, how much time and energy is sucked up by our concerns over time management and productivity.)

Conclusion

Follow these suggestions and you will, I promise, find time to blog. You might even lead a happier, more productive life overall - and, dare we hope, have more time for the really important stuff in life?

Google Analytics

by Perceval Mackendrick

Have you ever found out that you needed more statistics for your site, but wordpress never gave them to you because the only supplied you the number of unique visits you get?

Well, an elite company has a good offer that you can not resist. How would you like to claim your site and maybe get all the possible statistics of your website, blog, myspace page, (whatever you want) for FREE. Yes, thats right, for FREE.

Well, thanks to google, it can be free, they have so many unique things that no other company will ever be able to produce as fast as google.

Google Analytics is a site where you can go to register your blog.

Now, here may or may not be a chance to increase your Google Page Rank. I have heard stories that if you claim your blog on Google Analytics, it allows for google to up the Page Rank on it. So, whether I want to believe it or not, there have been times where people’s Google Page Rank has gone up just by when the claimed their blog.

Its not hard to do, all you have to do is copy and paste a tracking code to your blog, and as soon as Google Analytics finds the tracking code on your blog, it takes about 24 hours to load up all your statistics.

In a very short amount of time, you have found yourself the very statistical information you have been searching for, and for FREE too. We have to keep in mind that sometimes the things that have no price on them are the best of them all.

That is it for now, please feel free to comment on any issues regarding this or any post. :)

Google Pagerank

by Perceval Mackendrick

Today is going to be a very confusing discussion about the system that everyone depends on called the Google Page Rank. There have been a lot of problems with the page rank, or not problems, per se, but frustrations that we have been experiencing.

One day you see that your Google pagerank is at a 5, and the next day you see that its at a 3. On depressing days like this, one must think: “How did my Google Page Rank drop in merely one day?”

Well, the answer to the question is that google completely revising how it calculates page rank, and unfortunately for those of us that depend on the google search engine for our page views and traffic, seeing a page rank of 3 does not please us at all.

Well, I must inform you of one thing before you go all haywire on the google page rank, and want to *&%& google from the rear.

The number on your page rank (or your decreased number) does not mean that you will definitely get lower traffic to your site.

For example, WatchingFamilyGuy.com used to have a page rank of 5 a couple months ago, and then come the new year, and its sitting at a lame duck 3.

Fortunately, however, the traffic on the website has been increasing ever since the beginning of this year. Last year, the average visits per day was 200, and now its nearly 300 and increasing.

So, there is some good news for you here, just because your page rank went down does not mean that your website will get less traffic.

Regardless of what you do, do not stop posting or lose motivation for post just because you drop in google Page rank. And most of all, HAPPY BLOGGING :D
