Controversy of Paid posting

by Kamrul

controversyThis was probably the most talked about topic in blogosphere in 2006, and considers it to be more discussed in 2007 and years ahead. A lot of famous bloggers tried to draw a conclusion to this, but somehow it never concludes. Blogger getting paid for his/her blog isn’t new, since early days of blogging- blogger used get sponsored by some company or organization, the difference is whole blog instead of just a post. Things are started to get fuzzy from this point, so why not we first try to understand how bloggers earn conventionally (not included paid post).

How bloggers earn money

  • Advertising programs: Blogger run those ads in their blog or feed and earn money for clicks/impression/subscriptions etc.
  • Affiliate programs: Increasing number of blogger use this method to earn. If any readers of blog purchase or sign up through referral link, blogger get paid a certain amount.
  • Digital Assets: A lot of blogger these days make money through paid subscriptions, e-book or paid tele-seminar.
  • Donations: Well this don’t make that much money, but quite a few blogger has been successfully switched to full scale blogging for the generosity of their fans donations.
  • Consultation: This may be very new, just popped up in last year but getting quite a popularity among high scale bloggers. They are earning money by charging readers for their time in consulting because of the experience that their blogs have built them.
  • Marchendise selling: An increasing number of bloggers are attempting to make a few extra dollars from their blogs by selling branded products.
  • Flipping Blogs- In last year this became serious popular methods to bloggers to earn money. Flipping blog means selling blog.
  • Sponsorship: This is probably one of the oldest methods of earning in blogosphere. A sponsor pays monthly or one time a certain amount for displaying ads on blog. Usually if blogger gain quite a ground in blogosphere that is the time when they gain attraction of sponsors.
  • Blogging jobs: Growing popularity of blog open the doorway to bloggers to be hired and work for business organizations, blog networks etc.

As you can see bloggers do earn money through advising or promoting or linking different business organization or their products (in most of the cases). When a blog get sponsor (most of the top blogs have sponsor, whether they say it or not), they provide links back to sponsors site and as well as display ads of sponsor, that means directly or indirectly they are advocating that sponsor.

So why is it sponsored post should be treated different than sponsored blog?

That’s where controversy starts. Most honest blogger clearly identify sponsors link and advertising as well as affiliate links, you don’t have to worry about advertising programs as they do come with label that those are ads. On the other hand most sponsored post program do not allow or bound blogger to identify the post as sponsored. Sponsor of blog usually do not ask blogger to talk about them, means they do not influence bloggers article/views (mostly, but we have seen some bloggers do give advantage, positive voice to sponsors products). But in sponsored post program, blogger get paid to talk about a certain company/product, sometimes they are bound to talk positive (recently a lot of sponsored post program set a tone system for posts-Buzz, positive, negative etc.). So that means directly bloggers views are controlled by the tone specified by sponsor. So as you can see the problem is clarity, in sponsored blog readers can identify which one is sponsored and which one is blogger suggested, but in sponsored post mostly don’t.

But things has changed in last couple of months, now a lot of sponsored post program allow (even bound) to disclose blogger that the particular post is sponsored. As for the tone of blog, i think blogger have the choice to choose which. If he/she things the specified tone isn’t appropriate for the sponsor, why get it in the first place.

Some bloggers say “Paid posting is way to sell your soul“, well I definitely doubt that. A blogger always have choice of choosing, if still he/she choose to post a sponsored post with bias information, they would have done it even if there wasn’t any sponsored post. Giving positive review to blog sponsor and post sponsor isn’t different at all. As blogger can choose not to give advantage to sponsor of blog, they can choose same for sponsor of post. I will give you an example-

Consider my blog got sponsoring from Google but not Yahoo. So I blog regularly, but when it comes to talking about search engines i always give priority and positive feedback to Google even they don’t deserve it. On the other hand my brother didn’t manage to get any sponsor for his blog, so he do sponsored post and he blogged about Google with lots of feedback since the tone was described as positive. So where is the difference between me and my brother? We both did sell our soul isn’t it?

So who is responsible for your clarity, credibility and soul? you and only yourself. Paid posting is no different then sponsored blog, the difference is how you treat it and utilize it. Paid posting is nice as long as your tone is yours own and clearly identified as sponsored post. You only dictate how it would go, not me or paid posting company or some top blogger. But as i said this is open discussion, means I displayed my views regarding paid posting. Wouldn’t it be nice to see your view too? Please keep it in targeted subject matter.

Very good points you have here. Where there is an avenue for revenue, there will be racers. What is important is balance. Blogs that have more ads than content irritate me. However, one or two ad spots or ads blended in, don’t bother me and I do tend to expect them.

I received a card statement yesterday, and discovered that there was an unauthorized charge from the InfoSys Technologies LLC in the amount of $11.98
I wanted to resolve the problem and called their customer support number 517-639-0760, but I reached their answering machine.
From the message I found out that the best way to contact them would be through e-mail support@infosystemplates.net
I wrote a letter about my problem to the noted e-mal address, and within 15 minutes I received a reply that the situation will be reviewed, and in about 5-6
hours, I will receive a notice to my e-mail, and then, during 72 hours I will get a refund.
Today I have received a refund and want to take back all the claims for InfoSys Technologies LLC.
The mistake was corrected very quickly, and they have shown themselves as a serious company.
Besides, I got a free version of their product as compensation.
    Good work, keep it up!
