What Blogging is Not.

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

This video makes a good point on bloggers versus journalists. Blogs are whatever we want them to be. They can be our soul written on the web, or hard-fact evidence written to our pleasure. So, what is this guy to say that we can’t “journalize” when we write in our blogs?

As a avid blogger myself, I often find myself writing about something that happened in the news, or something that comes to my interest, by either the news or self discovery. Most of the time, its the news :P When I mean news, I mean television, because reading a newspaper, these days, is not much when you can look up anything in your public area faster on the web.

(That and its cheaper than paying how much ever you pay for the newspaper.) :P

The blogosphere, as the video states, is much more than that of journalism. It includes journalism, but it goes onto so much more than just than that. Its an exchange of writers ideas, concepts, and sometimes, a good way to start a journal.

As the guy in the video said, even news reporters look to blogs for ideas on what to report, and what not to report, even if at the end of the day, the news reporter’s boss says its actually not news.

But you see, there is the beauty of blogging. No one tells you what you can and cannot write about. Of course, if your blog is a tech blog, it would just be insane to write about why the mice in china can’t communicate with the mice in Aussie country.

Well, with this in mind, make sure that when you make your blog, it means something to you, even if it doesn’t mean so much to the public. Also, remember that if you get paid to blog, it is something that you should enjoy, not dread just because you want the money.

We all want money, its just not everything life is about :!: So, go explore, make a blog :!:

BlogRush In The Spotlight

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

I’ve delayed writing about BlogRush here, though I installed it on my Inspired Solo blog last weekend, because I wanted to give the blogosphere a few days to suss it out and see what the reaction was going to be, so I could sum it up.

What’s BlogRush?

BlogRush is the brainchild of John Reese, who blogs at Income.com . It debuted last weekend to much fanfare, and mixed reactions (see next heading). BlogRush is part sidebar widget, part affiliate/referral program. The widget is created by free code, generated by the BlogRush site upon completion of the sign-up process, which you insert into your sidebar. Then, it displays headlines from other blogs in your BlogRush category (Inspired Solo’s is law and legal.)

Of course, the other side to the value equation (besides the value to your readers of seeing other interesting headlines) is that your headlines get syndicated likewise on other blogs. How much exposure your headlines get depends on an impressions-based formula. You’re rewarded for traffic, clicks, and referrals to the program; the more exposure you give BlogRush, the more exposure it gives you in return.

Summing Up The Blogosphere’s Reaction

There have been several less-than-positive reviews of the service. The main complaints seem to be:

  • Repeated headlines that don’t rotate in the widget window (this seems to have been fixed);
  • Poor “match up” between and among some categories (BlogRush indicates it’s working on this problem by carving up too-broad categories even further);
  • Low quality traffic;
  • Low quantity traffic.

The last two problems depend partially on user behavior, as several commenters have pointed out. Many articles lately have focused on headline crafting. This makes ultimate sense, of course - it’s the headline that’s going to draw the attention of your would-be reader on some other BlogRush-enabled blog. You want to make sure that it meets several criteria, as I mention in this article at TIS.

A Note to Michael Martine

Here’s why I think BlogRush isn’t working, and most of the marketing category headlines on it are crap: Nearly all of the people who have signed up for it are too lazy to do what it takes to build their traffic the correct way. And that means that they’re also too lazy to create quality content that would result in getting clicked in the widget and that would benefit a blog’s readership. This lazy get something for nothing mentality compounds itself and the result is that the headlines that appear in the widget are crap. Given more time, more lazy people will sign up and there will be more… crap! So I don’t see how more time will help anything. There are so very few excellent blogs using BlogRush that it’s basically just a rush of crap.

No. I am not lazy. I do not skimp on creating good content for my readers. I also do not find “paid links” and “crap” in my widget. Finally, you really goofed by insinuating that if you’re not Problogger, DoshDosh, or - I guess - you, then your posts are “crap.” That might have been far from what you meant to say but that’s what it sounds like. And you know better. (You also don’t need to resort to some manufactured controversy to gen up your own traffic - you’re too good for that.)

Where I Stand

At TIS, I have experienced about a 10% uptick in traffic since installing BlogRush. While not all of that is due to the service, some of it is. I’m still monitoring the impact. I don’t know whether I’ll keep it up there, or take it down but right now, I don’t see a downside. The posts that are coming through seem to be of interest to my readers, even if tangential at best to my content (frankly, that’s a good thing - I wouldn’t want anything too directly competitive).

Anything that offers my readers more value that they might enjoy is fine with me. I don’t have the all-too-common fear (usually found in beginner bloggers - and it’s understandable because it all goes so contrary to our intuition) of sending readers away. I know they come back when I give them something of value. Although I took Michael to task earlier for some of his post on this subject, I do agree with him that the real value for bloggers is dependent on the quality of the posts featured in their widgets. If that changes for me, then it will definitely be hard to justify cluttering up the sidebar real estate with it on an ongoing basis.

As for “How To Geek”’s comment about “writing for a widget” - well, yeah, that would be stupid. I would hope my readers see the difference between being aware of a fact and chucking all previously held wisdom over in favor of said fact? My practice is quite simple: I write (or try to) good headlines. Then again, good headlines ARE short and contain no extraneous words. They also contain strong, active words; aren’t cute or gimmicky; accurately lead into the post; and have strong emotional impact. I just don’t see the difference between writing good headlines so you get noticed in a feed and writing good headlines so you get noticed in the BlogRush widget.

So, I am still going to maintain BlogRush on TIS, and see what the long-term impact is - whether the rise in traffic sticks around, and whether it leads to better conversions.

If you want to sign up for BlogRush, just click here and follow the simple instructions (note: not an affiliate link; if you want to throw some love my way, you can find the affiliate link in this post).

Yahoo and Microsoft Doing Chinese Censors’ Dirty Work?

Friday, August 24th, 2007

From the LA Times:

Yahoo Inc., Microsoft Corp. and other providers of blogging technology
in China agreed to try to sign up users under their real names and to
censor their posts, a journalism advocacy group that condemns the
accord said Thursday. Under the accord with the Internet Society of China, an offshoot of the
Information Industry Ministry, the companies are “encouraged” to
register users under their real names, Reporters Without Borders said
in a statement. The companies may be forced to censor content or
identify bloggers, the Paris-based group said.

This might be the price of doing business in China but it’s dirty business, and I don’t think it will play well over on this side of the pond.

Anonymous Blogging In China No Longer Banned - Just Strongly Discouraged

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

An earlier draft of a Chinese government policy had required blog service providers to register bloggers under their real names, thus effectively banning anonymous online blogging - a ruling with serious privacy and civil rights implications for that troubled country. Now, apparently, the requirement has been amended to “encourage” such disclosure, but not require it, thus amounting to a self-policing standard imposed on the blog operators and providers.

Miles Levin, Teen Blogger, Loses Battle With Cancer

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Here’s some sad news from CNN.com:

Miles Levin wrote that cancer and the fear of death could expand your heart and mind. So when he died Sunday, six days before his 19th birthday, he had blogged a lifetime of thoughts and dreams, words that somehow pierced through cyberspace and moved tens of thousands of readers to respond. Miles blogged on the Web site of Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.

You can also read his work, and his parents’ updates in the last few weeks, at www.carepages.com (free registration required).

While the loss of such a talented young writer is tragic in any circumstances, it’s hard not to be wowed by the impressive accomplishments Levin made in his too-short life. I’m most intrigued, though, by the community Miles created around and through his blogging. It’s an object lesson, I think, in how blogs can truly be used to create some powerful change in the world.

Blawg In A Box Launches

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

I am proud to announce the launch of my consulting business’s new service line - Blawg In A Box.

Through Inspired Consulting, I offer lawyers assistance and guidance on “finding the words that work” - copywriting, web writing, ghostwriting articles, etc. Here at Blog News Watch, I blog about blogs. So, it was perhaps a match made in heaven to marry the two into a service line that helps lawyers market their practices by blogging (blog + law = blawg).

I believe we’re going to see more of this sort of outsourcing in years to come. As more and more people realize their entrepreneurial dreams, they’re also going to realize that they just can’t do it all. Outsourcing of specific tasks is going to be even bigger than it is already. This makes for a good market to explore, I think. I also think we’re going to see other professionals start to explore blogging as a marketing tool. When you think about it, nothing helps create an aura of expertise faster than a well-maintained blog.

It was a natural fit for me; this new line has everything I love - blogs, writing, computers, the law, marketing. It’s like Christmas!

You can read more at the official announcement here, and find out more about Blawg In A Box here.

Six Apart and Palm Teaming Up For Foleo Users

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

From Blog Herald’s Minic Rivera comes this news:

Six Apart is working with Palm, Inc. to give Palm Foleo mobile companion customers access to Six Apart’s wide range of blogging services, including Vox, LiveJournal, TypePad and Movable Type. With these services available on the Foleo, users can keep blog and journal entries up to date and stay current with their communities while on the go.

Six Apart, of course, is the company behind Typepad, the popular, easy blogging platform, and Movable Type software. Foleo is the smartphone companion product introduced by Palm that aims to bridge the gap between mobile phone and laptop. So, this “marriage” might make some Typepad or MT bloggers very happy.
