Being controversial to get noticed
Yes it is true a lot of blogger get attention due to their controversial approach or style, you can say they take advantage of reverse psychology PR. In real world and virtual world something very similar about getting too much attention, you are either famous or Infamous. But the question is it really important to be controversial to get noticed in blogosphere? I really doubt.
While, sometimes, patting against fur gets you lots of comments and links, you can build relations with your readers in many different ways: entertain them, provide unique, expert information, give them unique information no one else does (for example provide news stories in your own style). What I see in the long run controversy doesn’t pay off, at some point readers loose interests and move on to others (just left you as a Jerk). If you write interesting posts, link to other resources (including blogs), comment on other blogs (engage in the industry community), you’ll get noticed.
Readers are your biggest asset in blogging, linkback, trackback comes from liking more then disliking. I remember few months ago an A lister blogger who was known for controversy as well as business entrepreneur in Sports (basketball) industry made his last infamous controversial posts. I said Last infamous, since he used to be always on the frontpage of Digg and Tailrank and now you won’t see his posts even after 10 pages, and alarmingly his traffic ranking is falling down (according to Alexa). So as you see being controversial won’t cut you any first class ticket in blogosphere, readers rule blogosphere, they can make you high on the top and dump you just like that. So better invest your mind and effort to build quality content to gain readership, not by being controversial.
